This branch is unusual in that I have been able to skip a generation through family oral history and the 1881 census

My great grandfather William BRAY was the illegitimate son of Mary Ann BRAY, and was born 13 February 1877

William's wife went missing in 1930 when his youngest child was only 3 years old-a lady in the village of Whitemoor helped to look after her and knew the family well

In 1973 my father spoke to this lady and it was she who said that William's father

was Joseph JANE,who had died, though I have yet to prove this

The 1881 census shows the 4 year old William living in the household of his grandfather James JANE in Bodmin-he is not a visitor-his mother was a live-in servant in Redruth

James JANE married Catherine BROWN at Lanhydrock, CON on 22 April 1853

James was baptised 13 December 1829 at St Neot, CON

In 1851 he is a Tinner living with his brother in law in St Neot

In 1855 they are living at Wind Whistle, Bodmin

His first 6 children are born in Bodmin, but in 1871 he is an Agricultural Labourer living in Cardinham, CON

In 1881 he is a Farm Labourer living at Rhind St, Bodmin

Catherine was baptised 19 December 1830 at Blisland, CON
