Chalgrove

 

GRAY, COVENTRY/SMITH, KING, WILLIAMS

The church is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin

 

 

The most surprising sight inside the church was the mediaeval wall paintings in the chancel.  The guide book states that they date from 1330 and depict the life of Jesus on the north wall and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on the south wall (see photo below).

 

 

The present church dates from the early part of the 12th century, and includes a chapel dedicated to St. James in the north aisle.  At the back of the church are albums of photos depicting events in the village over the years, including the Coronation in 1953. 

 

GRAY

 

 

William GRAY married Ann NEWELL at Chalgrove on 4 June 1794

 

William was baptised 1 May 1750 at Chalgrove

He was a Yeoman Farmer

He was buried 21 October 1804

Ann was baptised 16 July 1768 at Chalgrove

Follow her family under Thame, OXF

She was buried 30 March 1823

William GRAY baptised 4 June 1797

John Newell GRAY born circa 1801

Elizabeth GRAY baptised 30 May 1802

Thomas GRAY baptised 4 November 1804

The only GRAY headstones found in the churchyard are those pictured below, relating to Joseph and his wife Harriet WILSDEN

 

 

The inscriptions read:-

In Memory Of Joseph Gray died 7 March 1860 aged 65

Also of Christianna, daughter of Joseph

 

In Memory Of Harriet Gray the beloved Wife of Joseph Gray

died April 27 1868

William’s parents were William GRAY and Mary- a likely burial date for William is 24 August 1767 and for Mary either 21 August 1750 or 12 April 1760

COVENTRY/SMITH

 

 

Mary Ann COVENTRY alias SMITH was born circa 1808 at Chalgrove and I believe her baptism is the one listed as

Anna Maria SMITH 8 May 1808 - this took place a few days before her parents married

so she was also known by her mother's maiden name

 

  In 1861, the widowed Mary Ann was living in Waterstock, OXF with 3 of her children

In 1871 she is the Infant school mistress at Waterstock

  She was buried 13 January 1875 at Great Milton, OXF aged 67

Mary was baptised 10 Feb 1788 at Chalgrove and was buried there on 27 April 1851 aged 68
