John LAWRENCE married Ann BROWN at Great Rissington, GLS

On 8 April 1765

John was born circa 1742 place unknown

He was a bound apprentice to William PRESTON of Great Rissington on 1 July 1758 @ £8 8s

He became the Blacksmith of Kingham, and appears annually in the account books of the Churchwardens, Constable and Fieldmen

He left a “Day Book” which is preserved in Gloucester Record Office-it contains accounts, what appear to be medicinal recipes, and at the back the births of his children  and some later entries, probably by his grandson

It was a wonderful experience to be able to look through this little book over 200 years old that belonged to my direct ancestor-below is a verse taken from the book:-

Praises on Stones does but ambition feed

Let Every one to Their own Ways take heed

What I was and what you are

The day of Judgment will declare

He was buried 22 June 1822 at Kingham aged 80

Ann was baptised 30 September 1774 at Great Rissington, GLS

The youngest son George married Mary LEATHAM on 10 November 1804 at Kingham

Later entries in John’s Day Book record

1859 April 16 Father died

1864 December 17 Mother died

The first date ties in with the burial of George therefore Mother should be his wife Mary

The 1881 census shows a 70 year old George LAWRENCE, living in Kingham with his 59 year old brother David, both unmarried retired Blacksmiths, probably grandsons of John

The last family entry is

1885 Novbr 7 George died
