GEACH/MAY

 

From the dictionary of surnames:- Geach: English [Devon and Cornwall] nickname from Middle English geche, ge[c]ke, meaning fool, stupid person (of uncertain origin, but possibly Germanic)

 

John Geach MAY married Mary Ann LAMPIER on 3 July 1852

 

John was baptised 1 March 1829, illegitimate son of Ann MAY

His father is named as John GEACH, Farmer on his second marriage certificate

He was an Agricultural Labourer

After his first marriage, John dropped the MAY name and used GEACH as his surname

 

Mary Ann was born circa 1827/8 in Kenwyn, daughter of William

She died of Gastric Fever on 9 March 1863 in Trebudannon, aged 35

 

Their children were

William GEACH born 1 December 1852

Bessie GEACH baptised 6 April buried 1 October 1854

John GEACH born 2 May 1855

Edwin GEACH born 23 December 1858

Thomas James GEACH born 26 July 1861

 

All children born at St Columb Major, except for William at Mawgan in Pydar

 

John married his second wife Mary TREBILCOCK at St. Columb Major on 17 October 1865

 

Their children were

Elizabeth Ann GEACH born 22 January 1867

Alfred Hendred/Hender GEACH born 12 January 1870

Mary Ellen GEACH born 19 August 1872 died 1883

Fanny Emma GEACH born 20 December 1874

Arthur GEACH born 26 February 1877

Bethesda GEACH born 28 July 1879

 

John was still alive in 1891, Mary died in 1886

Edward was baptised 8 September 1744

He was buried 30 December 1820 aged 76

 

Elizabeth was buried 16 January 1836 aged 92

Ann MAY baptised 3 April 1779 buried 9 December 1780
