BRYDEN, RODDAN,CROSBIE

 

The family lived in the village of Amisfield, which was part of the parish of Tinwald

As this is my only Scottish branch, I have included the Roddan and Crosbie names on this page although they lived in the parish of Lochmaben at one point

BRYDEN

 

 

David BRYDEN was born at 3.20am on 8 October 1857 at Amisfieldtown, the illegitimate son of Elisabeth BRYDEN and William McLELLAN

For David's marriage and family go to Oxford City-BRYDEN

 

William was a farm servant, but nothing more is known of him

 

Elisabeth was born on 21 June 1829 at Amisfieldtown

She married Andrew GARDINER at Tinwald on 24 March 1865

She was a nursemaid, Andrew was a Journeyman Gardener

 

Their children were

John GARDINER born 26 June 1866

James GARDINER born 16 May 1868

Andrew GARDINER born 29 May 1871

All born in Dumfries

 

David was brought up by his maternal grandmother and her second husband in Amisfield

John BRYDEN married Mary RODDAN , no record of marriage exists

Scottish records provide much more information than their English equivalents,  the downside being that many events were not recorded in the first place

John was born circa 1803 in Dumfriesshire

He was a Mason

In 1841 he appears on the census in Amisfield aged 38

He died on 16 March 1851 and was buried at Tinwald-his last child was born posthumously

The Inscription reads:-

In memory of John Bryden late Mason he died March 16th 1851 aged 48 years

Also Mary Roddan his wife who died at Dumfries 4th March 1889 aged 79

Also Adam McGrigor who died in Greenbrae 15th July 1881 aged 70

RODDAN, CROSBIE

 

Mary RODDAN was born circa 1808 at Kirkmahoe, Dumfries

The IGI shows the baptism of a Mary RODDAN at Dumfries on 28 October 1808 but no parental information is given

 

Mary married John BRYDEN before 1827-see details of their children under Tinwald-BRYDEN

 

Mary married her second husband Adam McGREGOR at Mid Raeburn, Eskdalemuir

 on 26 June 1857

 

In 1861 they are living in Amisfield, where Adam is a Ploughman

living with them are Mary's sons Samuel and William and grandchildren Elisabeth MARTIN and David BRYDEN

The 1881 census books for Dumfries have been lost/destroyed

 

Adam died 15 July 1881

Mary died on 4 March 1889 of old age & cystitis

Samuel RODDAN married Agnes CROSBIE, record not found

 

Their children were

Mary RODDAN born circa 1808

Elizabeth RODAN born 29 June 1810

Isobell RODDAN baptised 2 November 1812

 

The last 2 children were born at Whitelaird, Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire

A search of the parish of Lochmaben in the 1841 census failed to find the family

 

Agnes, a widow, married her second husband Alexander DICKSON on 14 November 1819 at Dumfries
